Infrared Sauna Benefits for Recovery: What New Research Shows

If you've been treating your sauna session as a nice way to unwind after a workout, new research says it's doing more than that. A study out of the University of Jyväskylä in Finland found that infrared sauna use after exercise can measurably speed up recovery and even support long-term performance in team-sport athletes — a finding that matters for anyone training hard on a regular schedule, not just professionals.

What the New Finnish Study Found

Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä's Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences studied male and female team-sport athletes who used infrared sauna after exercise, either as a single session or consistently over a six-week training period. The results were clear: infrared sauna exposure helped prevent the usual decline in jump performance, reduced muscle soreness, and improved how recovered athletes felt after training.

Athletes who used the sauna regularly over the six weeks saw even more benefit — improved loaded jump performance and faster maximum sprint speed over the first few meters, more than training alone produced. Interestingly, infrared sauna initially raised physiological stress markers like nocturnal heart rate and cortisol in female athletes, but those effects leveled out with regular, consistent use.

As lead researcher Essi Ahokas put it: "Infrared sauna can be a feasible and safe way to promote recovery, especially during busy match schedules." Why Recovery Matters More Than the Workout Itself

It's easy to think the workout is where the progress happens. In reality, your body adapts and rebuilds during recovery — not during the training session itself. Athletes playing multiple matches a week, or anyone squeezing workouts around a full-time job, often shortchange this part of the equation. Insufficient recovery doesn't just slow progress; it raises the risk of injury and overtraining. That's exactly why this study matters: it suggests infrared sauna is a legitimate recovery method with a clear return on the time invested.

How Infrared Sauna Speeds Up Recovery

Infrared saunas heat the body directly through radiant light rather than heating the surrounding air, which is why they run at lower temperatures than a traditional sauna but still produce a deep, effective sweat. That heat exposure increases blood flow, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to fatigued muscle tissue while clearing out metabolic waste built up during exercise.

The Jyväskylä researchers noted the performance benefits didn't appear to come from direct physiological changes in the muscle tissue itself. Instead, they were more likely tied to improved training quality — athletes who recovered faster were able to train harder and more consistently, which is where the real gains came from. Infrared sauna doesn't replace training. It protects your ability to keep training well.

What This Means If You're Not a Pro Athlete

You don't need a match schedule to benefit from this. If you're lifting a few times a week, training for a race, or just dealing with the everyday wear of an active life in the Arizona heat, the same principle applies: better recovery means you show up stronger for your next session. Reduced muscle soreness and improved perceived recovery are exactly what most people are chasing when they walk into a recovery studio in the first place.

Researchers were candid that the science on heat-based recovery methods is still developing, and questions remain about optimal session length and frequency for non-athletes. But the direction of the evidence is consistent: regular infrared sauna use supports recovery, and it does so safely.
